Munich Opera Festival

Munich opera festival is one of the most celebrated German opera festivals that are strewn over the summer months. Munich opera festival is the most popular among them it is a 140 year old festival that celebrate German opera performances. It is conducted yearly in the Bavarian capital at the end of June or the beginning of July. There are two more opera festivals that usually precede the Munich opera festival - festivals of Bayreuth and Salzburg.

The Munich opera festival had its initial performance in 1875 and thereafter, it has acquired an important place in the world renowned opera festivals. The organizers have succeeded in preserving the original charm of the event even after 140 years of its existence. That is why it is one of the most attended opera events of Europe.

The opera fans of the world get together in the festival venues with feverish enthusiasm and high expectations. They are never disappointed and the conductors ensure high class performances and premiers every year. That is why Munich opera festival is the longest existing opera fest in the world.

The Prince Regent Theater which is built in 1900 is the principal venue this year. But besides the main venue, the performances are conducted at numerous other small and big venues all over the city. The Munich opera festival reaches its crescendo at the end of July and culminates in an imposing outdoor performance called ‘Opera for all’. This is a free show which can be attended by anybody and usually a massive audience turns out at the event. This mega event takes place at Max-Joseph-Platz square outside the National Theatre.

A wide range of modern composers exhibit their talents during this event. Apart from opera performances, other concerts and chamber music by 201-year-old Bavarian State Orchestra also take place. It is this orchestra that consists of many maestros and veterans that perform in the pit for all operas.

Every year the Munich opera festival begins with a Roman Catholic service at Michaelskirche. This service is accompanies by a choral concert. The service is conducted by the Archbishop of Munich and Freising. This performing art festival attracts a huge number of visitors and tourists from all over the continent as well as the world. It is a summer event that should not be missed.
